Summer Must-Have: Drought-Resistant Perennials

Best said by landscape designer Nicole Lopez, “You need to match plants to the climate that you live in. It just doesn’t work the other way around.” Here at Mountain Valley Farm we couldn’t agree more! With the intense heat and desire to keep in budget on your water bill – planting for the season is key! We have put together a list of drought-resistant perennials at Mountain Valley Farms.
  • Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’: Upright grower with red flowers in Summer
  • Sedum ‘Tetractinum’, ‘angelina’, ‘blue spruce’, ‘ogon’ (all of these are ground cover versions of Sedum) Fleshy evergreen leaves; loose clusters of purplish or white flowers in summer
  • Yarrow, aka ” Achillia”: Golden yellow flowers on tall silvery-gray leaves from mid-summer to early autumn
  • Artemisia ‘Powis Castle’ and ‘Silver Mound’: Hybrid form that grows upright to 2-3 feet tall
  • Cone Flowers: Abundant, purple-pink daisylike blooms; grows 2 to 4 feet tall; prefers full sun
  • Ice Plant: Grow year round, with individual shoot segments growing more than 3 ft (1 m) per year
  • Creeping Phlox: Hairy, bright-green, evergreen foliage; violet, pink, or white flowers in late spring/early summer
  • Lavender: Mounding evergreen shrub with silvery-gray needlelike leaves and spikes of erect, lavender-purple or white flowers in summer
  • Rosemary: Highly aromatic with pine-needlelike leaves; grows to 5 feet tall
