1 1/2″ long green leaves, with purple stems. Known for its use in Hindu culture and Ayurveda. Also known as Tulsi. A common ingredient in Thai cuisine and in teas. Used medicinally for digestion and immune system support. Sacred to Hindus.
Grow in fall, spring, summer with temps 70°F or more and night temps above 50°F. 90-100 days to maturity.
Begin light harvesting after plants have become established. It is best done in the early morning when the temperature is cooler and the leaves are less likely to wilt. A full harvest should be completed just before the plants start to flower. Cut the entire plant 4-6″ above rockwool to promote repeat growth. Leaves are easily bruised when picking, so handle carefully. Do not store at a temperature less than 50°F (10°C).
