Looking to revamp your landscape or kick-start your spring garden but not sure where to start? We understand the feeling and are here to help! The Mountain Valley Farms team has put together a few helpful tips and resources to help get you started:
1. Have a plan! With a little help from our friends at the Urban AG Council we have put together a few questions to get yourself started on the planning process:

  • What are your needs?
  • What are your interests?
  • What is your lifestyle?
  • What is your personal taste?
  • How often do you entertain?
  • Do you like to do yard work?

2. Plant in odd numbers: When grouping your plants, it helps to have an odd number. Doing so will visually balance out your design.

3. Plant in large groups: When you are looking to cover a large area we recommend planting in large groups with the same plant. For example: if you like 5 different plants, plant a group of each as opposed to 1 of each in a group. This will allow each group to really POP in the landscape! It will also give your landscape a more cohesive look. In addition, if you want to have more dimension, we recommend planting groups of lower growing plants in the front and taller plants behind. This will allow you to “mix it up” but still keep the design principle of planting in larger groups.

4. Mix-up Bloom Times: Selecting plants that have different bloom times at different seasons can help keep your landscape and garden looking nice all year long!

5. Know your limitations! If a project seems to be bigger than expected try hiring a landscape contractor to make your life easier! Here is a helpful link from the Urban AG Council to help find a professional in your area!
